Cottage Pie (England)

2 onions-finely chopped
1.5 lb ground beef
1 tbsp flour
1/2 c red wine
2 garlic cloves-finely  chopped
1 c beef stock
2 carrots- finely copped
salt and pepper

1/5 lb mealy potatoes peeled and cut into chunks.
4 tbsp butter
2 tbsp cream or milk
salt and pepper

Saute onions in large, oven proof casserole until soft. Add garlic. Add the ground beef. Add the carrots and salt and pepper. Stir in the red wine, stock and flour. Simmer until thickened. Cover and cook for 1 hour. Mean while cook the potatoes in boiling salted water for 15-20 min. Drain and mash with potatoes masher until smooth. Add butter and cream and season to taste. Place potatoes over beef mixture. Bake for 15-20 min at 400 degrees until browned . Serves 6.

Scotch Broth (scotland)

At our Stake Relief Society Birthday Celebration, Gina Fama made the most amazing food. I will post the recipes.

1 lb Lamb
 6 3/4 C Pearl Barley
1 garlic clove- finely chopped
2 leeks- sliced
3 small turnips- finely chopped
3 carrots- thinly sliced
2 onions-chopped
2 celery stalks- sliced
salt and peper

Cut lamb into small pieces and boil in the water. Add the pear barley, reduce heat and simmer gently covered for about 1 hour. Add the veggies and season with salt and pepper.  Cover and simmer for 1 hour. Remove from heat and let cool. Remove any solidified fat from the surface. Reheat and serve. Serves 6-8

Visiting Teaching

I have been asked to report our Visiting Teaching to the Bishop every Sunday morning in Ward Council. When you have made contact with your sister (visit, phone or mail), please report to your supervisor, Jennifer Esquerra or myself. You can text, email or call it in. You don't have to be completely done, just report as you go.

Service Projects

Service Projects going on for 2012

VA Hospital- We are collecting trial size toiletries. Shampoo, soap, razors, etc. The hospital does not provide anything for our vets. You can also give full size bottles of shampoo as the nurses will dispense into cups for the patients.  If you have anything to donate, please place it in the box on the Relief Society Table outside the RS room on Sundays.

VA Hospital- We are making slippers for the patients. The hospital runs out every month. Crocheted or Knitted (or store bought, if you find a good deal).  If you are interested in making them, there is yarn on the RS table. Or you can use your own. Sizes 7 to 13. Mostly men colors, but they have some women. Any pattern.

Quilts- We are also making twin size blankets for the hospital. If you are interested in sewing, you can pick up a bag of fabric on the RS table and make a blanket top. Any pattern! If it does not turn out to be a twin size blanket, then we will give it to the Battered Women's Shelter (Safe House).  We have the batting and will get it tied. We also have blankets that have been tied, that need to be bound. Check the RS table for those as well.

Safe House- We are taking everything that is left over from the trash to treasure events to the Safe house. Also blankets that are made by our Sisters.

Start cleaning out the closets, garage and husband's boxes for things you can get rid of. Organize your House!

Then come to the church and get some WANTED items. Everything free! Invite Everyone!!!

RS Service Project

"When Ye Are in the Service

of Your Fellow Beings Ye Are Only in the

Service of Your God" (Mosiah 2:17)

We are starting a new Service Project. We will be making winter hats and scarves for Joy Junction, the homeless shelter in our ward boundaries.

We are in need of all sizes. You can do any patterns or use any materials. This is great! Your own creativity and your own talents.

We have posted some basic patterns if you are in need, but there are tons more patterns online or in books.

We would love for you to tell your friends, neighbors, coworkers, etc. The more we have helping the more we can help those in need in the cold winter months.

We will be delivering them sometime in October, so we have 4 full months to work on these.

There will be a donation box in the RS room on sunday's or you can drop them off at Sister Giras' home.

We have some yarn available in the RS closet now and we will be buying more soon.

Crochet Scarf

Crochet Simple Scarf

ch = chain,sc = single crochet,sk = skip,sp = space

Size J crochet hook and starting chain of 20 should result in a scarf approx 5" wide.

Row 1: SC in second ch from hook, *ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next*. Repeat from * to *, ending with sc in last ch. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: SC in first ch 1 sp, *ch 1, sc in next ch 1 sp*. Repeat from * to *, ending with sc in turning ch. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat row 2 until you reach desired length. If you'd like a more finished look, you can make a simple sc border around the scarf, putting 3 sc stitches in each corner. Bind off.

Round 2: (Do not turn in this pattern) Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around. Sl st in 3rd ch of ch3. (20 dc)

Round 3: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st around. Sl st in 3rd ch of Ch3. (40 dc)

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in next 3 st. *2 dc in next st. 1 dc in next 4 st*

Materials needed:60 inch wide fleece, Scissors

Step 1: Start by laying your fabric out just as it came off the bolt- folded so it is 30 inches wide from the fold to the open side. It isn't necessary, but you can now cut off the finished edge if you prefer (it usually looks like it is folded up and pressed).

Step 2: Measure along the folded edge and make a small cut (you can also mark it with a marking pencil instead of cutting) every 6 inches (you'll get about 6 from each yard this way). Repeat on the open side so the cuts or marks will line up with each other.

Step 3: Cut a straight line from the mark on the folded side to the mark on the open side to make one long strip that is 6 inches wide.

Step 4: To make fringe on the ends of your scarf, make 5 cuts about 1.25 inches apart and about 4 inches long into each end.

Size: Small adult head (large adult head)

Materials: 1 100Gm. Skein of Worsted yarn, Set of double pointed needles, size 7

Gauge:5 stitches = 1 inch in stockinette stitch

Directions: Loosely cast on 100 (110) stitches. Divide them evenly between three of the needles. Begin knitting in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Work in stockinette stitch for 6.5" (7"). On the next round, begin decreasing as follows:

Round 1: (Knit 8, Knit 2tog) around.
Round 2 and all even rounds: Knit.
Round 3: (Knit 7, Knit 2tog) around.
Round 5: (Knit 6, Knit 2tog) around.
Round 7: (Knit 5, Knit 2tog) around.
Round 9: (Knit 4, Knit 2tog) around.
Round 11: (Knit 3, Knit 2tog) around.
Round 13: (Knit 2, Knit 2tog) around.
Round 15: (Knit 1, Knit 2tog) around.
Round 17: Knit 2tog around.

Cut the yarn leaving a 15" tail, weave it through the stitches remaining, and fasten off.

This makes a scarf about five inches wide and 60 inches long, depending on the yardage of your chosen yarn.

1. Cast on 12 stitches.

2. Knit every row until you have about a yard of yarn left.

3. Bind off.

4. Use your crochet hook to weave in the ends at the top and bottom.

No Sew Fleece Blankets

Thursday 14th at 9am (this is a day activitiy) we will be learning how to make no sew blankets.

You can come and watch or bring your own fleece and make one there. See samples below to get an idea about what you would like to do.

This is a reversable one (above). If you would like to do one of these, you need 2 pieces of fleece the same size. One print and one solid. Or two prints or 2 solids. Your choice!

Here is one with a panel. You can find these.

You can also do a single patter or solid.

If you are making a baby blanket or small child a good size is 1 yard of fleece.

If you are making one for a bigger child or adult, you might want to go 2 yards or more.

Hancock fabric is having a sale on monday on fleece.

No need to bring anything else.

These make great gifts! I am going to do a Bills Football fleece for my hubby for Christmas!
